Description

Delage is a blue convertible in front of an opera house. The grand facade is left as a sketch while the car is beaded densely and richly.

What the picture shows

The body combines two blues: deep navy along the lower panels, pale sky-blue over the bonnet, wings and hood. Silver and white beads pick out the grille, headlamps, handles and mouldings; the tyres are black; and the front hub cap is beaded as a small rosette. The side glass is left dark. The theatre facade with its columns, sculptures and dome is printed in sepia on the canvas and carries no beads — the contrast between the matt background and the glittering body is what holds the composition together. Seven colours are split between two blues, black, silver, white and one warm accent on the hub cap — a short range, and the body only gains from it.
