Description

“Day and night” is built on a single circle cut in half — starry darkness on one side, warm daylight on the other, an owl sitting between them.

What the picture shows

The bird is worked in russet, brown and white beads, with large green eyes and finely stitched breast feathers. The left half of the circle is deep blue with white specks of stars; the right half is orange, like an evening sky. Black branches with small leaves and clusters spread around it, and orange spikelets rise from below. Outside the circle the ground shifts from blue into violet and pink and stays as print on the canvas. Beads carry the owl, the branches, the rim of the circle and the stars, so the drawing reads clearly from across the room. The owl's breast is worked in short rows running from top to bottom, close to real plumage; the eyes are laid in green beads with a black centre. The stars are single white beads set across the dark field.
