Description

“Christmas goby” shows a shaggy Highland bull in a tartan scarf under a garland of bunting flags.

What the picture shows

The head fills the foreground: the long ginger coat is worked in rows of brown, cream and golden beads, the fringe falls over the eyes, and the long horns curve upwards in pearl beads with dark markings. The scarf is green and red tartan, each line of the check run in its own thread of beads. A garland of red, white and green flags hangs above the head, and a sprig of red berries sits in the corner. The background of snowy blue fir branches stays printed, with blue beaded snowflakes scattered over it: on art canvas the beads do not cover the surface, and the print gives the scene its depth. The coat is beaded in long rows following the direction of the locks, and that is what makes the bull look shaggy rather than merely brown. The flags and the scarf add sharp patches of colour that balance the warm mass of the head.
