Description

Cheer cook shows a round chef in a tall hat dancing by the window with a glass in his hand. The mood is light, almost theatrical.

What the picture shows

The white jacket and apron are worked in pearl beads — rows along the edges, the collar and the cuffs, with a lilac trim. The red neckerchief is red, the checked trousers a black-and-white chequerboard of large beads. The window frame and its bars are built from silver and pale blue beads in long columns, the skirting board in red. The face, the hands, the blue sky with clouds beyond the glass and the wooden floor stay as print on the canvas — the beads work on the silhouette and the window, not everywhere. The ten colours rest on contrast: white and silver hold the figure and the frame, black and red add rhythm.
