Description

“Call of the cockerel” rests on one bright silhouette: a rooster with a sweeping tail against a light, calm blue-and-white setting.

What the picture shows

The bird stands in the middle — red comb and wattles, orange-gold breast — and from it a tail of blue, violet, turquoise and yellow feathers fans upward and out. Yellow lilies on slender stems and turquoise scrolls fill the space around him, and two vertical bands of blue-and-white tile-like ornament run down the sides. The rooster, the flowers and parts of the side bands are beaded; the pale patterned ground stays as print on the canvas, so the picture keeps its air. The tail takes up most of the upper half and is worked in long rows of beads along each feather — that is what gives the picture its movement. Small turquoise dots scattered over the white field pick up the colour of the side bands.
