Description

“Bright houses” is a winter town assembled from dozens of coloured façades pressed close together.

What the picture shows

The houses stack in several tiers — red, green, yellow, lilac, one blue with a pale blue roof, another almost black with golden windows. Snow lies on the roofs in white beads, small windows glow in the walls, lanterns hang by the doors and birds sit on the wires. A black tree with curling branches rises at the top right, a yellow and violet sun shines at the left, and snow falls across the whole scene. The pale blue sky and parts of the walls stay as print on the canvas; beads carry the outlines, the roofs, the windows and the snowflakes. Each roof is beaded in its own colour and its own direction of rows, so the houses never merge into one another. The windows are marked as squares of four beads, the snow on the roofs as a dense white band.
