Description

BMW F-1 catches a blue single-seater coming out of a bend with a rival already closing in behind. The grandstands are full and the tarmac is wet.

What the picture shows

The car’s body is worked in two shades of blue bead, the word Racing on the airbox in white, the fat tyres in black. A yellow-and-orange stripe along the sidepod adds speed, and silver beads pick out the front and rear wings. Short diagonal rows of pale blue trail from the wheels — spray thrown off the wet track. The stands under their blue-and-white awnings, the grass and the chasing car stay as print on the canvas; the beads work only on the car and its wake. Ten colours make it possible to split the body into light and dark planes, so the car never reads flat and the spray becomes a layer of its own.
