Description

“Amber gaze” is a raven in profile against a large cream moon.

What the picture shows

The bird’s head and breast are worked in blue, violet and black beads, with pale scrolls and spirals winding through the plumage like painting; the beak is heavy and the eye a warm amber with a dark pupil. A full moon glows behind: rows of cream and ochre beads with faint patches of craters. The dark ground around it stays as printing on the canvas, so the bird’s silhouette reads clearly. The scrolls on the plumage are beaded in a lighter tone over the dark, and they are what make the raven decorative rather than naturalistic. The craters on the moon are marked with a few paler beads, so the disc does not read as a flat even patch. The beak uses the darkest tone in the palette, so the bird’s profile stays clear even against the pale moon.
