Description

“Wings of the Desert” is an eagle soaring over sand dunes against an enormous sun.

What the picture shows

The bird spreads its wings across the whole picture: the flight feathers are worked in deep blue and cobalt beads, warming towards the body into ochre and brown, the head pale, the beak hooked. A vast disc of sun rises behind, built from rows of gold and sand. Below lie the dunes — soft waves of warm sand with long shadows — and fine turquoise strokes of sky run above. The beads cover the bird, the sun and the crests of the dunes; the deep shadows in the hollows stay printed, and they are what gives the desert its volume. The tips of the flight feathers stop short of the canvas edges, so the composition stays gathered inside the square.
