Description

“Thunder of Darkness” is a black horse in golden harness against a stormy sky.

What the picture shows

The horse is shown to the chest with its head held high: the neck arches, the mane streams in black locks, the nostrils flare. The body is worked in black and dark grey beads with warm highlights, and over it lies the harness — golden straps, round patterned bosses, a browband of several plates. The edge of a saddle and gold tassels show on the right. The silver-grey ground with its smoky washes stays printed; there are only eleven colours, and the piece rests on gold against black rather than on the size of its palette. The bosses on the harness are all the same size and evenly spaced, so any shift in a row shows at once against so dark a ground.
