Description

“The grandeur of the depths” is a blue whale moving through swirling waves under the moon.

What the picture shows

The whale takes the middle: the back is worked in deep blue and cobalt beads, the belly pale cream, the broad tail raised. Waves curl around it — azure, turquoise and white spirals flowing into one another. A round golden moon glows at the upper left, and long green weeds rise from the bottom. A thin blue beaded border runs around the edge of the picture. The dark water between the waves stays as printing on the canvas, so the spirals read separately instead of merging into one blue field. The whale’s belly is beaded across the body and the back along it, so a natural fold appears where the two directions meet. The weeds below rise to different heights and stop short of the whale.
