Description

“Star waltz” is a dancer whose golden star bodice gives way to a skirt scattering into pale sparks.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the knees on a warm cream ground. The hair is pinned up under a wreath of golden flowers, and the bodice is a large five-pointed star worked in gold beads. Below it the dress turns into a wide cascade: grey, white, cream and gold rows of beads fall downward, with sewn-on sequins glinting between them. The face, shoulders and arms stay as printing on the canvas — that is by design; here the beads work only on the costume and the ornaments. The cascade of the skirt is uneven: in places the bead strands hang lower, in others they break off higher, which makes the hem look as if it is moving.
