Description

“Shade of night” is a black raven on a branch inside an oval that recalls stained glass.

What the picture shows

The bird sits half-turned: the plumage is worked in black, blue and violet beads with a cold sheen, the beak and feet are darker, the eye pale. Behind it is an oval window of blue and azure “glass” with white highlights, edged by a dark frame of small segments. Branches with leaves and round beads grow around the oval, and a thin bough lies along the bottom. The grey-blue ground at the corners stays printed and closes the composition. The glass in the oval is beaded in large areas of one tone with hard edges — exactly the way real stained glass behaves.

The oval does not touch the edges of the canvas, so the piece looks complete without moulding.
