Description

“Secrets of the east” is an elephant dressed in flowers on its head and ears, as if for a festival.

What the picture shows

The head faces the viewer directly: grey ears spread across the whole square, worked in steel, lilac and warm beads with a dark outline, the trunk lowered, pale tusks on either side. Large flowers sit on the brow and the ears — orange, crimson, violet and blue, with yellow centres and small turquoise beads between them. The watercolour ground with its pink and blue runs dripping downward stays printed, which keeps the piece light. The ears are beaded in rows along their edge and the forehead across, so a faint ridge appears at the join and holds the shape of the head.
