Description

“Honey mosaic” is a large bee against a background of golden honeycomb, with open flowers beside it.

What the picture shows

The bee is seen from above and slightly to the side: the furry thorax is worked in ochre and warm brown, the abdomen in black and orange bands, the legs thin and dark. The wings are made of pale translucent beads with golden veins. Hexagons of comb are laid out at the corners — gold outlines with white fill — and at the lower right a peach and a pink flower open among turquoise leaves. The grey ground between the cells stays printed, so the mosaic never overwhelms the subject. Pollen on the legs is marked with separate yellow beads, and the shadow under the bee is a row of dark beads along its outline.

The difficulty is average with nineteen colours; the comb is beaded last, once the insect is finished. The comb runs right to the edge of the canvas, so the composition seems to continue beyond the picture.
