“Fearless” is an owl looking straight at you — a large close-up on a dark ground.

What the picture shows

The bird’s face takes up the picture. Two round eyes are worked in amber-yellow beads with black pupils and a dark rim, with a grey-blue beak between them. The feathers on the head lie in short rows: ochre, rust and ash, with white flecks above the eyes and across the cheeks. Above and to the side the dark ground bursts into orange and turquoise splashes like thrown paint; those washes stay printed, while the beads cover the owl itself and part of the splashes. Around the pupils the beads lie in circles, and on the cheeks in short rays from the centre, which makes the plumage look ruffled.
