Description

“Emerald leaves” is a handful of ginkgo fans on a pale ground — a quiet botanical study.

What the picture shows

On an almost white ground with soft grey washes lie fans of leaves: two large emerald ones with dark centres, beside them golden ochre and white, and brown ones below. Every fan is stitched in rays from the stalk to the edge, so the leaf reads as a set of stripes. Thin stems run down and cross, making a loose bouquet with no vase. The beads cover the leaves and stems — green, turquoise, gold, chocolate and white; the pale ground around them stays as printing on the canvas and keeps the composition airy. The leaves are deliberately unequal: one is open to its full width, another turns its edge to you, a third is half hidden behind its neighbour, so the bouquet looks gathered from a living branch rather than stamped out.
