Description

“Can’t Sleep” is a black cat sitting in a night garden and watching a full moon.

What the picture shows

The cat is seen from behind and slightly to the side: a black back with blue sheens, a white patch on the chest, one ear turned, a green eye showing. Directly behind it hangs a large pale yellow moon worked in cream and ochre beads. Flowers crowd around — pink, red, white and gold on tall stems with green leaves, rising almost halfway up the picture. The deep blue night ground with its small stars stays as printing on the canvas, and it is what lets the cat’s silhouette read without any outline. The nearer flowers are beaded in larger clusters and the far ones in two or three beads, which gives the garden its depth.
