Description

“By the fire” shows two sparrows warming themselves beside an old lantern with a candle.

What the picture shows

The lantern stands on the left: a black frame with a little roof, a candle burning inside with a white and yellow flame, the glass rendered in orange and yellow beads. To its right two sparrows sit pressed against each other, in brown and beige plumage with dark specks on their heads. A knitted cloth in grey, black and red stripes with a fringe lies folded beneath them. A branch with red berries and small blossom crosses the whole picture above, with dark berried twigs on the lantern to its left. Three lilac tassels hang on cords at the right. The bottom edge is filled with yellow and orange straw, and the warm printed background stays as the image.
