“Provence” frames a river and a thatched cottage with pink briar roses. The flowers come forward, the landscape stays behind.

What the picture shows

A branch with large pink flowers curves along the left edge and across the bottom: the petals are worked in three shades, from pale pink at the rim to a deeper tone near the heart, and the centres are built from yellow and white beads. The leaves are long and green, with veins picked out bead by bead. A cluster of blue forget-me-nots and one darker blue flower are added at the lower right. The whole middle and the upper right corner stay as printing: a still river, the white walls of a cottage under a russet thatched roof, trees and a strip of sky. The micro beads outline the flowers and foliage without covering the canvas, which is exactly why the landscape reads as distance behind the bouquet.
