Description

“Vintage poppies” is a bunch of red poppies in a tall greyish-lilac vase, set against an old garden with a wrought-iron railing.

What the picture shows

The flowers gather in a dense cap across the upper two thirds: seven open poppies and several buds turned in different directions. The petals run from bright red to orange with yellow highlights, and the centres are deep blue flecked with white. The leaves are large and cut, in three shades of green with a turquoise sheen. The vase is plain and cylindrical, greyish-lilac with warm light down one side. A dark blue wrought-iron railing with scrolls crosses the lower left — it is beaded too, and its graphic line anchors the foot of the composition. The background is a warm ochre-yellow blur of garden; it stays as printing on the canvas, so the micro beads cover only the flowers, the vase and the railing.
