Description

“Reflection in the water” shows a couple under a red umbrella on a humpbacked bridge over a canal, with half the picture given to the reflection below.

What the picture shows

At the top, in the middle of the bridge, stand two figures: a woman in a red dress with her back to the viewer and a man beside her, both under an open red umbrella — the only bright patch among muted tones. The bridge is stone, with wrought-iron railings worked in black and white beads; an old lamp post leans against it on the left, and behind it rises a façade with pale blue shutters. Under the arch the water is dark green, crossed by green and white horizontal strokes that stand for ripples. Lower down, the couple's inverted reflection spreads through those ripples with the red spot of the umbrella. The canal ground stays as printing on the canvas; the beads cover only the architecture, the figures and the highlights.
