Description

«Wedding Icon – The Holy Mother of God» is the Marian half of a wedding pair, matched to the icon of the Saviour.

What the picture shows

The Mother of God is enthroned with the Christ Child on her lap. She wears a dark red maphorion lined with blue and a red cap edged with pearls; the Child is in a blue mantle over a pale shirt, both arms open. Her right hand reaches forward, palm towards the viewer. The haloes are worked in ochre and pearl circles, and behind the figures a gold ground opens onto architectural halls picked out in blue and white. Above, on either side of the halo, sit blue star medallions with monograms. The border differs from the other icons here: over a deep wine-red field, small beaded dots gather into flower rosettes and wavy garlands. Coverage is partial — the figures, throne, halls and the dotted border pattern are beaded, while the wine-red field and the gold ground stay printed.
