“St. Xenia” — a half-length image of the blessed one in a headscarf and a long blue coat, her hand raised in blessing. The mood is plain and warm.

What the picture shows

The saint stands frontally. Her head is covered by a light blue-grey patterned scarf tied under the chin, with grey hair showing beneath it. Over her dress she wears a long blue coat with wide sleeves and a warm red-ochre lining that shows at the cuffs; a pale collar with buttons falls across her chest. Her right hand is raised, palm outward; her left holds a string of prayer beads. The halo is golden-orange, pale at the centre. The ground is cream with faint painted scrollwork, edged by a dark brown border of diamonds and corner fans, with an inscribed cartouche below. The fill is partial: beads cover the clothing, scarf, halo and border ornament, while the ground, face and hands remain printed on the canvas.
