“St. Vyacheslav” — a waist-length image of the prince in a jewelled crown and rich robes, calm and collected in mood.

What the picture shows

The prince faces the viewer: fair hair to the shoulders, a long wavy beard, a steady gaze. His crown has a red cap set with coloured stones. The cloak is red and gold, covered with fine ornament, and a turquoise-blue robe with broad folds shows beneath it. A decorated vertical band with green and red inserts runs down the centre of the figure; the right hand grasps a shaft, the left rests low. The halo is golden, laid in concentric rows. The beading is partial — beads cover the figure, halo, corner rosettes, side border and lower cartouche, while the cream background with its printed scrollwork remains as the backdrop. A brown-and-gold border runs round the field: corner fans at the top, a small repeating pattern down the sides and the name cartouche at the foot.
