“St. Vitaly” is a waist-length image of the venerable saint in monastic dress, his right hand raised in blessing. The mood is quiet and collected.

What the picture shows

The saint stands almost frontally in a coffee-brown cassock, with a dark green patterned cape over his shoulders. He has a long grey beard and a calm, attentive gaze. The halo is built from several concentric rings, green at the centre and warm gold at the rim. The right hand is folded in blessing, the left rests quietly near the chest. The fill is partial: beads cover the figure, the halo, the wide chequered border and the two fan-shaped medallions in the upper corners. The cream ground with its fine printed scrollwork stays exactly as printed on the canvas, which noticeably lightens the work.
