What the picture shows

The saint faces the viewer: a young man with dark curly hair and a short beard. His garment is crimson-red with plain broad folds; a lilac-blue cloak is thrown over his left shoulder and falls away with a warm golden lining. In his right hand he holds a small cross of dark wood with gilt edging; his left hand is pressed to his chest, palm outward. The halo is golden-orange, built from concentric rings. The ground is light cream with faint painted scrollwork. A dark brown border of diamonds and rosettes runs around the edge, with fan-shaped corners above and an inscribed cartouche below. The fill is partial: beads cover the clothing, cloak, cross, halo and border ornament, while the patterned ground, face and hands stay printed on the canvas.
