“St. Veronica” — the righteous saint holding out the cloth with the face of the Saviour. The subject reads at once.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, almost frontally. A white-and-blue veil with a fine ornament covers her head; her face is calm. The robe is crimson-red, with a blue panel at the breast and a golden band along the neckline. In both hands she holds an unfolded pale cloth bearing the face of Christ in a crown of thorns, its edges falling in soft folds. The halo is golden, of several rings. The beading is partial: beads cover the figure, the veil, the cloth with the face, the halo, the corner ornaments and the border, while the cream background with its printed foliate scroll stays painted on the canvas.
