«St. Thomas» is a waist-length image of the apostle with an open scroll. The figure is young, the colours warm, with a single green accent.

What the picture shows

The apostle stands half-turned: his right hand is raised, the fingers folded in a gesture of speech, while his left holds an unrolled scroll whose text is worked in green and red beads on white. His hair is short and fair, his face young and beardless. The outer himation is a terracotta pink in broad soft folds, with an emerald-green tunic showing beneath. The halo is assembled from rings of yellow, gold and warm brown. The pale olive background with its printed leaf scroll stays free of beads on the canvas. Beading covers the figure, the scroll, the halo, the side ornamental bands, the corner fan rosettes and the name cartouche below, so the coverage is partial. The face and hands stay painted — no beads are laid over them, which is why the image keeps its painterly softness.
