Icon Bead Embroidery Pattern on Art Canvas "St. Sophia"
Description
“St. Sophia” shows the martyr in a deep raspberry maphorion. Her gaze is turned aside and slightly upward; the mood is collected.
What the picture shows
The saint is shown to the waist, turned slightly to one side. Her head and shoulders are covered by a maphorion of dense raspberry-red with a golden edging; beneath it a pale blue garment falls in quiet folds. Her hands are folded at her chest. The halo is wide, built from several rings running from orange to light gold, and it fills most of the upper field. The fill is partial: beads cover the figure, the maphorion, the halo, the chequered border and the fan medallions above, while the cream ground with its printed floral scrollwork stays on the canvas. Below there is a red name plate and a band of ornament, and a narrow border of brown and amber squares runs along the edges.
