Icon Bead Embroidery Pattern on Art Canvas "St. Ruslan"

«St. Ruslan» is a waist-length image of an elderly martyr in green vestments. The tone is calm, almost severe.

What the picture shows

The saint faces the viewer: a high forehead, a long white beard, a direct and concentrated gaze. He wears a grass-green phelonion with fine beaded texture, and over his shoulders lies a pale omophorion with dark crosses set in square panels. His left hand holds a Gospel book in a pink-red binding with gold ornament; his right is raised in blessing. The halo is worked in rings of yellow, gold and warm ochre. The cream-olive background with its printed leaf scroll stays unbeaded. Beading covers the figure, the book, the halo, the side ornamental bands, the corner fan rosettes and the name cartouche below. The coverage is partial: the green of the vestments looks especially dense against the smooth printed ground. The face and hands stay painted — no beads are laid over them, which is why the image keeps its painterly softness.
