Icon Bead Embroidery Pattern on Art Canvas "St. Rostislav"
Description
“St. Rostislav” — a waist-length image of the holy prince in a jewelled crown, with a staff in his hand.
What the picture shows
The prince stands facing forward, with a fair beard and a direct gaze. On his head is a gold crown set with red stones and pearls. A red-crimson cloak with broad embroidered shoulder-pieces lies over his shoulders, and beneath it a blue-turquoise garment falls in fine folds, belted and trimmed with gold. His right hand holds a beaded staff, his left is lowered. The halo is wide, worked in rings of gold and amber. The background is a light olive with printed leaf scrollwork; two fan-shaped corner motifs sit above, narrow brown-and-gold bands run down the sides, and a cartouche with the name closes the panel below. The beading is partial: beads cover the figure, the cloak, the garments, the halo and the whole frame, while the face, hands and background stay as printed on the canvas.

The piece is vertical, the size of a small household icon. It suits a name-day icon for a Rostislav. There is a good deal of fine gold ornament on the shoulders and belt — that area is easier to work in daylight.
