“St. Philip” — an image of the young apostle with a large unrolled scroll. A green mantle and a pink-lilac tunic make a soft pairing.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown half-length, beardless, with short dark curly hair. Over a pink-lilac tunic with a narrow ornamented band across the chest he wears a deep green mantle that covers his shoulders and right arm in large folds. In both hands he holds a wide unrolled scroll filled with lines of text, taking up the lower third of the composition. The halo is golden-orange, with thin rays and a pale centre. The ground is cream with faint painted scrollwork; a dark brown border of diamonds edges the field, with fans in the upper corners and an inscribed cartouche below. The fill is partial: beads cover the mantle, tunic, halo and border ornament, while the ground, face, hands and the scroll with its text stay printed on the canvas.
