Icon Bead Embroidery Pattern on Art Canvas "St. Pelagia"
Description
“St. Pelagia” — a waist-length image of the martyr with a cross in her raised hand, in green robes and a pale blue veil.
What the picture shows
The saint stands frontally, her head slightly bowed. Her chestnut hair is bound with a slim circlet set with a red stone. A pale blue veil with soft folds is draped over her shoulders; the outer robe is grass green, long and deeply creased. Red cloth shows beneath it on the left. Her right hand is raised holding a golden cross; her left hangs low, a strand of red beads at the wrist. The halo is large, worked in gold, ochre and pale blue rows. The beading is partial: beads cover the figure, halo, corner rosettes, the ornamental side band and the lower cartouche, while the cream background with its printed scroll stays on the canvas. A brown-and-gold border runs round the field: corner fans at the top, a small repeating pattern down the sides and the name cartouche at the foot.
