“St. Nicholas” shows the hierarch in a pale blue vestment holding the Gospel book — one of the most recognisable icon images.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, almost frontally: a high forehead, a short white beard, a direct and attentive gaze. The phelonion is pale blue and covered with small crosses; over it lies a golden-ochre omophorion, also marked with crosses. The right hand is raised in blessing, the left holds a red Gospel book with an ornamented cross on the cover. The halo is warm gold with a fine rim. The fill is partial: beads cover the figure, the vestments, the halo, the Gospel book, the border and the corner fans, while the cream ground with its printed scrollwork stays as it is on the canvas. A narrow chequered border and amber corner fans hold the composition together, while a red cartouche and a band of ornament close the field below.
