What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, turned slightly. His hair and beard are grey with an ashen cast, his gaze on the viewer. The robe is brick-red with soft folds, a pale undergarment showing beneath. His right hand holds a slender stylus, the left an open pale scroll bearing text. The halo is golden, made of several rings. The beading is partial: beads cover the figure, the clothing, the scroll, the halo, the corner ornaments and the border, while the cream background with its printed scrollwork is left unbeaded on the canvas.
