Icon Bead Embroidery Pattern on Art Canvas "St. Leo"

«St. Leo» is a waist-length image of the bishop with a Gospel book. The vestments are lilac-violet, the tone solemn and restrained.

What the picture shows

The bishop stands frontally, his right hand pressed to his chest, his left holding a Gospel book in a binding of gold and green ornament with coloured inserts. His hair and short beard are dark blond. The dress is built on a deep lilac-violet with soft gradations; over his shoulders lies a pale omophorion with dark crosses set in square panels, while the collar and cuffs are trimmed in gold and green. The halo is assembled from rings of yellow, gold and ochre. The pale olive background with its printed leaf scroll stays free of beads: beading covers the figure, the book, the omophorion, the halo, the side ornamental bands, the corner fan rosettes and the name cartouche below. The coverage is partial. The face and hands stay painted — no beads are laid over them, which is why the image keeps its painterly softness.
