“St. John” — a hierarch in pale vestments, held in a restrained palette of gold and beige.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown half-length, with a high forehead, grey hair and a short white beard. His vestments are the colour of warm cream, covered all over with small golden-brown crosses. An omophorion with blue and gold bands and tassels falls across his shoulder. His right hand is raised in blessing, and the edge of a white sleeve with red lining shows below. The halo is broad, moving from greenish ochre to warm gold. A brown-and-gold foliate border runs around the edge, with rosettes above and a cartouche below. The beading is partial: figure, vestments, omophorion, halo and frame are beaded, while the cream printed background stays on the canvas.
