“St. Ioanna” — the myrrh-bearing saint holding a vessel. A warm icon built on red and blue.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, almost frontally. A pale blue-and-white veil covers her head, edged with a small red-and-blue floral ornament. Her robe is red-terracotta, with a blue cloak thrown over the left shoulder. The right hand is raised palm outwards; the left holds a golden vessel of myrrh. The halo is built from ochre and gold rings. The beading is partial: beads cover the figure, the veil, the vessel, the halo, the corner ornaments and the border, while the cream background with its printed foliate scroll stays painted on the canvas. A red name plaque runs along the bottom.
