Icon Bead Embroidery Pattern on Art Canvas "St. Ignatius"
Description
«St. Ignatius» shows the elderly bishop with a Gospel book in his hands. It is the most contrasting piece in the batch: brick red beside turquoise.
What the picture shows
The bishop stands frontally, holding a large Gospel book before him in both hands, its green-and-gold binding set with a cross and coloured inserts. His hair and long beard are white, his forehead high, his gaze direct. The phelonion is brick red with a fine pattern worked in alternating warm shades; over his shoulders lies a turquoise-blue omophorion with square panels and crosses. The halo is assembled from rings of yellow, gold and ochre. The pale olive background with its printed leaf scroll stays free of beads: beading covers the figure, the book, the omophorion, the halo, the side ornamental bands, the corner fan rosettes and the name cartouche below. The coverage is partial. The face and hands stay painted — no beads are laid over them, which is why the image keeps its painterly softness.
