“St. Helen” — the saint is shown as a crowned empress in richly ornamented robes, holding a cross.

What the picture shows

She is depicted half-length in a tall crown set with green, blue and gold stones. A pearl-edged collar covers her shoulders, and her long robe is patterned with squares of emerald, sky blue and gold that read like enamel plaques. Over it falls a coral-red mantle in soft folds. In her hands the saint holds a gold cross laid on a pale blue cloth. The halo is gold, built from even concentric rows. The border is brown-and-gold scrollwork with rosettes above and a cartouche below. The beading is partial: beads cover the figure, crown, robes, halo and border, while the ivory background with its printed damask is left open.
