What the picture shows

The young warrior sits on a rearing white horse, a dark red cloak streaming to the left over golden-yellow armour with a fine scale pattern. His right hand lifts a slender spear that runs diagonally across the whole composition to the jaws of the green serpent below. The harness and bridle are laid out in gold and orange circles, the mane in pale ones. The serpent coils at the horse's hooves, its body green with yellow and white highlights. The ground is a desert landscape of low hills under a pale sky. A wide blue border with a light turquoise floral ornament in an eastern manner runs around the edge. The beadwork is clearly partial: beads take the cloak, armour, halo, harness, serpent and border, while the horse, the earth, the sky and the distant hills stay entirely printed on the canvas.
