“St. Gennady” — a waist-length image of the venerable saint holding a rolled scroll, warm and quiet in tone.

What the picture shows

The saint faces forward: grey hair and a long white beard falling to his chest. A blue monastic hood with a veil covers his head and shoulders, showing a green lining beneath. The outer robe is brick red with a darker fine pattern and deep folds, and the sleeves are green. Both hands hold a rolled pale scroll with blue trim in front of him. The halo is broad, made of blue, turquoise and gold rows. The beading is partial: beads cover the figure, halo, corner rosettes, side ornament and lower cartouche, while the pale background with its printed leaf scroll remains on the canvas. Fan rosettes fill the upper corners, a narrow ornamental border runs down each side, and a cartouche in a gold frame sits at the bottom.
