«St. Emily» is a waist-length image of a young martyr with a cross in her hand. The mood is light and quiet, without excess solemnity.

What the picture shows

The saint stands facing the viewer: her right hand holds a golden cross at her breast, her left is raised palm outward. A pearl-white crown worked in pale beads sits on her head, with dark chestnut hair falling to her shoulders. The clothing is built on the rose-coral folds of the outer cloak and an emerald-green under-dress, with a narrow white band down the centre. The halo is assembled from rings of yellow, orange and gold and is noticeably lighter than everything around it. The warm cream background with its printed leaf pattern is what stays free of beads. Beading covers the figure, the halo, the wide ornamental frame with its corner rosettes and the name cartouche below. The coverage is partial, so the printed image stays visible and sets the overall warm tone. The face and hands stay painted — no beads are laid over them, which is why the image keeps its painterly softness.
