“St. Elizabeth” — an image of the venerable martyr in a monastic veil, holding a cross. The blue and white dress makes it the calmest piece in the series.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown half-length and frontal. A blue monastic veil with a white lining closely covers her head and shoulders and frames her face; a pale patterned cape falls across her chest. On a dark cord she wears a large ornamented cross set with red and gold. Her right hand holds a small wooden cross, her left is raised with the palm to the viewer. The halo is golden-yellow with a pale centre. The ground is cream with faint painted scrollwork; the border is dark brown, with diamonds and rosettes, fans in the upper corners and an inscribed cartouche below. The fill is partial: beads cover the veil, robes, crosses, halo and border ornament, while the ground, face and hands stay printed on the canvas.
