What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist in a tall olive-green klobuk whose veil falls onto his shoulders. The mantle is green as well, with cool light glints along the folds. He has a long white beard and deep-set eyes. The halo is a ring of warm gold with a fine rim. The right hand is raised in blessing; the left holds a small white church with pink-red domes. The fill is partial: beads cover the figure, the halo, the church, the ornamental border and the corner fans, while the pale cream ground with its printed scrollwork stays on the canvas. A red cartouche and a band of ornament run along the bottom. The corner fans are worked in amber and brown beads and echo the rhythm of the narrow chequered border that frames the field on all sides.
