“St. Daniel” shows the prince-monk holding a model of a church. A restrained brown palette with one bright accent.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, frontally, in a low princely crown set with coloured stones. His garment is dark brown-maroon with soft folds; his beard is reddish and his gaze direct and serious. In his hands he holds a white-and-blue model of a church with domes and a bell tower — light in tone, it draws the eye at once against the dark clothing. The halo is built from green, gold and red rings. The fill is partial: beads cover the figure, the crown, the church, the halo, the border and the fan medallions above, while the cream ground with its printed scrollwork stays on the canvas. The border is made of small brown squares, amber fans fill the upper corners, and a red cartouche closes the field below.
