“St. Barbara” — an image of the great martyr in a crown, holding a chalice and an unrolled scroll. The colours are warm: crimson, gold and ochre.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown half-length, in a gold crown set with green and red stones; a light veil falls from beneath it and waves of dark hair rest on her shoulders. Her robe is crimson-red with a broad ornamented shoulder piece and a gold clasp at the chest. In her right hand she holds a gold chalice on a tall stem, in her left an unrolled scroll bearing an inscription. The halo is gold, pale at the centre. The ground is light cream with fine painted scrollwork, framed by a dark brown band of diamonds, fans in the upper corners and an inscribed cartouche below. The fill is partial: beads cover the robes, crown, chalice, halo and border ornament, while the ground, face, hands and scroll text stay printed on the canvas.
