“St. Alexandra” — an image of the holy empress in a crown, a cross in her raised hand. The palette is green-turquoise with gold and red.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown half-length and frontal. On her head is a gold crown set with green and red stones, and from beneath it a green-turquoise veil falls over her shoulders. Her dress is imperial: a broad ornamented band runs from top to bottom down the centre, flanked by pale blue patterned sleeves, with red and blue layers of clothing showing below. In her raised left hand she holds a small gold eight-pointed cross; her right is open, palm to the viewer. The halo is golden-yellow, paling towards the centre. The ground is cream with faint scrollwork; the border is dark brown, with diamonds, fans in the upper corners and an inscribed cartouche below. The fill is partial: beads cover the robes, crown, cross, halo and border ornament, while the ground, face and hands stay printed.
