What the picture shows

The Mother of God is shown half-length in a deep crimson maphorion falling in soft folds; the Christ Child sits on her left arm in rose-red robes, his right hand raised. She holds a white cloth in her hand. The haloes are worked in pale circles rimmed with blue, and the ground beneath the arch is gold. The figures rest on a cushioned footrest stitched in deep blue and violet tones. Light-blue columns carry the arch, with small pink flower sprays in the upper corners. The wide border carries a blue plaited ornament with yellow rosettes and red squares at the corners. Coverage is partial — the figures, haloes, columns and border ornament are beaded, while the gold ground and the outer blue band stay printed on the canvas.
